Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from my initial consultation?
At your initial consultation, Fiona will carry out an in-depth assessment of your symptoms as well as taking a full medical history. You are advised to bring along a list of any medication you are taking and any relevant medical reports if you have undergone any recent tests or scans.
A physical assessment will then be carried out. This may require you to partially undress in order to see the problem area, therefore please come dressed appropriately. You may wish to bring shorts/ vest top as appropriate.
Following a thorough assessment, Fiona will be able to give you a provisional clinical diagnosis of your condition and discuss with you the recommended management.
This will include treatment options, expected duration of treatment and the expected outcome. Most musculoskeletal disorders should improve within 4-6 treatment sessions.
You will receive a short treatment at the end of your initial consultation if appropriate.
Initial consultation (and treatment) will last 40 minutes.
Every opportunity will be given to you to ask questions about your condition to ensure you have a full understanding of the diagnosis and appropriate management.
What are the physiotherapy options?
Treatments are predominantly aimed at reducing pain, restoring normal movement and function as quickly as possible.
Treatment options may include: pain relieving techniques, soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, myofascial release, exercise programmes (including core stability), electrotherapy, and taping. You will also receive advice on how to get back to normal activities at home and work as well as ways to prevent recurrence in the future. If you are involved with sports, Fiona will include information on safely returning to your training and sport and ways to prevent re-injury in the future.
Review appointments and treatments are 30 minutes, (unless a longer session is recommended.)
It is normal to experience a temporary mild increase in your symptoms following your initial assessment or treatment. These symptoms will normally subside within 12-24 hours. Please do not hesitate to contact the clinic if you have any on-going symptoms or questions about your treatment.
Do I need to be referred by my GP for physiotherapy treatment?
No, you do not need to be referred by your doctor for treatment. Physiotherapists are autonomous practitioners and their extensive specialist training means they should be your first ‘port of call’ for any musculoskeletal problem.
With your permission, Fiona will write a report to your GP on completion of your treatment and will advise you if you need onward referral for consultant opinion, with regard to your condition.
Can I use my Private Health Insurance?
fhp is a registered treatment provider with most major private health insurance companies such as BUPA, AXA PPP, Aviva, CIGNA and PRU Health.
Please check your individual policy for more details on how to access Physiotherapy via your insurance and if you are liable for any excess on your insurance policy.
